Thailand says yes to Peruvian avocados

Thailand has become the latest Asian country to approve imports of Peruvian Hass avocados. According to Peru’s Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), the phytosanitary protocol came into force on 11 May.

Peruvian avocados are already shipped to China, Japan and India and Minagri said it hoped to secure access to South Korea, the Philippines and Malaysia this year.

The 2019 campaign got underway in week 15 and exports are expected to reach a total of 335,000 tonnes, according to ProHass.

This is a similar volume to last season, but a key feature of the 2019 campaign will be a better distribution of fruit throughout the season, thanks to new plantations in the north of Peru coming into production earlier, leading to higher weekly shipments during April.

“This will help us avoid supply peaks and guarantee more stable volumes on the market,” said Daniel Bustamante of ProHass.
