Productivity research

NZ Avocado is involved in research projects to better understand avocado production in New Zealand and support growers to sustainably produce high yields of quality fruit.

Despite increasing industry yields over the last three years, many orchards are challenged with low and often irregular production. Despite having best practice guidelines in the grower manual there is not yet a “recipe” for growing avocados in New Zealand. Research is focused on understanding different production systems being used by growers in New Zealand and where efficiency gains can be implemeted. Effort has shifted in recent years to not only focus on yield but also consider profitability of orchard production. By characterising exisiting systems, growers can learn from each other and more rapidly innovate towards a more profitable and sustainable growing systems.

Past and current research outcomes are communicated through field days, Avoscene articles, videos and information on the industry website. These resources are intended to support the grower to improve their orchard performance.
